Dr. Jinyoung Ryu, an alumni member of Global Finance Research Center (Prof. Doo Jin Ryu) of College of Economics, was appointed as an Assistant Professor for the Department of Economics at at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Xi'an Jiaotong University, one of China’s nine most prestigious groups called C9 League including Beijing University and Tsinghua University, has joined hands with the University of Liverpool, a traditional British university, to create the first Chinese-English joint university representing one of the research-oriented universities.

Dr. Jinyoung Ryu studied at Sungkyunkwan University starting from his bachelor’s degree to his Ph.D. In August of 2022, he received a Ph.D degree (Professor Doo Jin Ryu as advisor) after four years of graduating from the College of Economics, and he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the SKKU Global Finance Research Center for six months in order to prepare for job market overseas.

This is the first time since the establishment of the department in which a graduate of the department of economics of our school is appointed as a professor at a prestigious university abroad. This is a very unusual achievement, considering that most of the faculty members of economics departments in universities at Seoul as well as local universities mostly have doctorate degrees from universities abroad. It is also seen as a rare case that he was appointed as an economics professor in his twenties.

Dr. Jinyoung Ryu will start his lectures at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (https://www.xjtlu.edu.cn/en) in the summer after completing his lecture on ‘Financial Economics’ at our school this spring semester.

Dr. Jinyoung Ryu said, “With the help of the combined bachelor’s and master’s with Ph.D degree course of the college of economics, and BK21 support program, I was able to focus on my research and quickly obtain my doctorate degree.” When I applied to be a professor abroad, I received a lot of helpful advice from the dean and advisor, as well as Professor Robert Webb and Professor Jonathan Batten, senior researchers at the Global Finance Research Center at our university. The center’s global network played a crucial part in being appointed by universities abroad. I am the second Ph.D. graduate of SKKU Finance Lab and I received a lot of inspiration and advice from my first Ph.D senior graduate (Prof. Hee-jin Yang of WISE, Dongguk University) who was appointed as a professor right after graduation. I also hope to be an alumnus who can motivate juniors in the future to overcome various uncertainties in starting their degree programs,” he said.
