Department of Systems Management Engineering, Consecutive Awards at the Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers Conference

-Students Dohyun Bu, Yoojeong Byeon, Chanho Kim, and Seungjoon Choi received the 'Silver Award' at the Korean University Student Industrial Engineering Project Competition

-Professor Donghee Lee received the 'Baekam Thesis Award' from the Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers

-Professor Jong Seok Lee received the 'Internationalization Award' from the Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers

Dohyun Bu (21), Yoojeong Byeon (21), Chanho Kim (19), and Seungjoon Choi (18), currently enrolled in the Department of Systems Management Engineering, achieved the 'Silver Award' at the 2023 Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers Fall Conference held in Ulsan for two days starting from November 2nd. The award was given as part of the Korean University Student Industrial Engineering Project Competition.

The competition, held since 2005 and now in its 19th year, aims to foster collaboration through team-based projects, cultivate creativity through diverse project executions, and propose solutions to real issues faced by companies and society. This year, 50 teams from 20 universities nationwide participated, with 20 teams from 13 universities passing the first round of evaluations. Following the second round of oral presentations for the top 10 teams, one grand prize, one gold prize, two silver prizes, and six bronze prizes were awarded.

The project team from the Department of Systems Management Engineering introduced their research titled 'Development of Continual Learning Technique for Estimating Regression Models Using Minimal Data.' The award recognizes the excellence of the project results conducted through the university's Undergraduate Research Program (URP), supervised by Professor Jongseok Lee.

Meanwhile, Professor Donghee Lee from the Department of Systems Management Engineering received the Baekam Thesis Award at the same conference, sharing the honor with Professor Seungjoon Shin from Hanyang University.

Established in 1990 through the generous funding of Dr. Hamin Go, who made significant contributions to the field of production engineering, the Baekam Thesis Award is now in its 34th year. The award is given to the author of the most academically and industrially valuable paper published in the Korean Journal of Industrial Engineering within the last three years.

The awarded paper, titled 'Prediction Method for Remaining Effective Life and Optimal Replacement Time at the Step Level of Multi-Stage Manufacturing Processes,' identifies the most deteriorated stage in multi-stage manufacturing processes and estimates the optimal replacement time, thereby reducing uncertainty in the idle state of the entire process. The proposed method is applicable to various manufacturing fields and is evaluated as a research result that can significantly contribute to Manufacturing DX, including smart autonomous manufacturing and digital twin technologies.

In addition, Professor Jongseok Lee from the same department also received the Internationalization Award on the same day.

Established in 2013, the Internationalization Award selects recipients by calculating the number of papers published in the overseas journals 'Korean Journal of Industrial Engineering' and 'Industrial Engineering & Management Systems' that were cited and published. The award aims to recognize contributions to the internationalization of the Korean Industrial Engineering Society by actively introducing domestic research results to the global audience.

Professor Jongseok Lee conducts research on the development of artificial intelligence for smart autonomous manufacturing using machine learning and optimization methods."
