Art Professor Jung Yeondoo's Work "One Hundred Years of Travels" to Be Presented in "MMCA Hyundai Series 2023"

The artwork " One Hundred Years of Travels" by Professor Jung Yeondoo from the Department of Fine Arts has been selected as part of the "MMCA Hyundai Series 2023" and will be exhibited at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) until February next year.

The "MMCA Hyundai Series" is an art project organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) and sponsored by Hyundai Motor, which has been supporting solo exhibitions, including new works by mid-career artists, since 2014. It focuses on introducing trends in contemporary Korean art and various cases.

In the new work, " One Hundred Years of Travels," Professor Jung explores the story of Korean immigrants who crossed over to Mexico a hundred years ago. Drawing inspiration from the transplantation myth of a plant that became a century plant when it crossed from Mexico to Jeju Island, known as the "Nine-Palm Cactus," the professor delves into the narrative of Korean immigration to Mexico.

This exhibition, showcasing a total of five video, installation, and sound works, including four new pieces, approaches the theme of "migration and foreignness" as a realm of potential that transcends time and space, connecting seemingly unrelated existences. Furthermore, the exhibition encourages contemplation on the relationship between strangeness and familiarity, the imagination of displaced spatiotemporal experiences, cultural and historical gaps between generations surrounding migration, and the existence that moves and translates across boundaries.
