2021 SKKU Top 10 News


● “The Global Leader, SKKU”, VISION 2030 Announced


Sungkyunkwan University announced VISION 2030 as a vision for next 10 years, which suggests “Global leader creating future society values with creative challenges and innovation. The Global Leader, SKKU!” In this vision, the plan to make 30 academic programs in global top 20 programs by 2030 is included. To accomplish the vision, 4 big goals are proposed: ▲Innovation of university education, ▲Research Focused Leading University, ▲Collaborative Partnerships, and ▲Enhancing University Brand. To accomplish these, our university will make use of ▲Global Learning Platform, ▲Research Scale-Up Platform, ▲Collaboration and Development Platform, and ▲Global Brand Platform.


● Jarad Diamond, the author of <Gun, Germs, and Steel>, world’s great scholars global lecture 


Sungkyunkwan university designed a new lecture model -‘Global Lecture’ – to provide students with high quality education by integrating university lectures with lectures of great scholars. Through global lecture, students pre-learn the materials from great scholars’ lecture via online, and discuss about it or learn deeper in offline lecture. As a first step of this model, Jarad Diamond, the author of <Guns, Germs, and Steel> and a professor of both UCLA and SKKU, delivered a lecture with title of “Be Prepared!” and “What can we learn from the COVID-19 crisis?” in the global lecture named “The Era of Upheaval”. The lecture was developed with Prof. Koo Jeong Woo in Sociology Department.


● “Challenge during Summer Vacation”, Successful 12-week of Challenge Semester 


Sungkyunkwan university firstly introduced the Challenge Semester to provide students with various opportunities during summer vacation last year. Like last year, university prepared innovative convergence lectures of various sectors such as AI, 4th industrial revolution, Data Analysis, Machine Learning, Language, and Career, which many students actively participated in. Furthermore, the university aggressively pushed ahead with internship program by which students not only experience industrial environment with Korean representative companies and local community, but also find out the problem of real industry or local community and solve the problem. Additionally, the university strived to provide students with international relation program through International Summer Semester.


● Most Selected for Research Support Program in the field of Humanities & Social Sciences 


Sungkyunkwan university ranked first in ‘2021 Humanities & Social Sciences Research Support Program’, which is held by Korea Research Foundation and the Ministry of Education, with total 6 researches being selected. Humanities & Social Sciences Research Support Program is composed of ‘Institute Programs in the Humanities & Social Sciences’, ‘Humanities Korea-2’, ‘Social Sciences Korea’, and ‘Excellent Scholars Program’, and SKKU was selected for 5 projects for ‘Institute Programs in the Humanities & Social Sciences’ (total funding: 9.88 billion Korean won), and 1 for ‘Social Sciences Korea’ (total funding: 550 million Korean won). The university is leading facilitating researches on humanities and social sciences, and fostering the excellent researchers via these programs.

Prof. Kim Dae Sik, Park Geun Chil, and An Myeong Ju(Medical Department), Park Nam Gyu(Chemical Engineering/Polymer Engineering) and Lee Young Hee(Center for Integrated Nanostructure Physics) are selected as the most impactful researchers of this year by Clarivate. Clarivate announced the list of ‘2021 the world most impactful researcher(HCR)’ who are top 1% of the number of citation for last 10 years. Among 47 Korean researchers, 5 researchers belong to Sungkyunkwan university, which is the largest number among private universities.


● Top 1 private university and within top 50 for departments based on QS ranking 


Sungkyunkwan University achieved 1st place for 2 consecutive years among private universities for the largest number of departments in top 50 QS ranking for department with total 5 departments – Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Advanced Materials Science and Engineering, Public Administration, and Library and Information Science. In top 100, Modern Language, Media Communication, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Arts, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Machine Engineering, and Electronic and Electrical Engineering, total 12 departments were included so that the university was evaluated as maintaining continuous competitiveness based on excellent research power.


● School of Medicine ranked 46th (Second in Korea) in THE Worlds University Ranking


School of Medicine, Sungkyunkwan University, ranked 46th place in 2022 THE World School of Medicine Ranking, which maintains the second place in Korea. School of Medicine showed excellent performance on all 5 evaluation criteria - educational environment, research performance, the number of citation, globalization, and collaboration with industry so that it has solidified its position as the world’s top school of medicine. Currently, the School of Medicine strives to train leading medical man powers based on the school doctrine of In-ui-yea-ji(Benevolence, Justice, Courtesy, and Wisdom) to contribute the happiness of mankind.


● SKK GSB held, FT World Weekly MBA Evaluation World 35th place, Korea 1st ranking 10 years row


SKK GSB was achieved 35th place in the FT ‘2021 World weekly MBA Evaluation’, which maintains Korea 1st ranking for 10 consecutive years and world top 50 for 5 consecutive years. FT Weekly MBA Evaluation is the index that indicates the status and level of business schools. SKK GSB holds △Service for Career Development 5th rank, △Get Promotion 13th rank, △Investment Value 16th rank, △Ratio of foreign professor 17th rank, and △Ratio of foreign advisor 16th rank so that it gets high score in career development and globalization. SKK GSB is changing to meet the demands of companies and students by newly making AI MBA program and Business Analytics Program(MSBA).


● Provision of high quality educational contents by collaboration with Coursera – Global MOOC Platform 


Sungkyunkwan University is providing high quality educational contents by making partnerships with global MOOC platform Couresera. Coursera is the biggest MOOC platform in the world which has 4,300 lectures and 7,700 million users. Sungkyunkwan university has opened 8 various programs – Learning Korean Language, Korean Philosophy, Big Data, Energy, and Software- with start by Prof. Lee Geum Hee’s <The Korean Alphabet: An Introduction to Hangeul>. The university expects to provide high level of educational contents and lead new educational environment in pandemic era.


● SKKU achieved 1st place in National Customer Satisfaction Index(NCSI) Private University category for 15 consecutive years


Sungkyunkwan University achieved 1st place in National Customer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) Private University Category for 15 consecutive years. According to a survey of 4,070 students from 15 major private universities nationwide, the university scored 84 point on the degree of customer’s expectation and 83 point on customer loyalty, which is 5 point up and 10 point up from the same period of last year respectively. With overall score 79 point, the university achieved 1st place for 15 consecutive years. This is the result of endeavors to follow up fast changing education trend with student customized operation such as introduction of Challenge Semester, Establishment of Student Success Center, Opening of S-on (Professor-Students consulting platform), Student Success Gateway, and Hosting SKKU Myeongnyun Lecture.
