Professor Kim Sang-hyun (Dept. of Russian Language and Literature), Kim Sung-soo (University College), Kim Chung-seop (Dept. of Pharmacy), Selected for 2021 Academic Research Support Project Excellent Achievement

Professor Kim Sang-hyun (Dept. of Russian Language and Literature), Kim Sung-soo (University College), and Kim Chung-seop (Dept. of Pharmacy) of our university were selected for the 2021 Academic Research Support Project Excellent Achievement and won the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Award.


This project is aimed at discovering and spreading remarkable academic research and encouraging academic activities by rewarding researchers who contributed to the project. The Ministry of Education received 138 candidate projects through public offerings and recommendations for 24,276 academic and research support projects announced last year and selected final excellent achievements through comprehensive evaluation.


Professor Kim Sang-hyun of the Department of Russian Language Literature was recognized for his excellent achievement, 『Domostroi. Russian customs and Cultural History of Daily Life』. He translated “In-Home Discipline” prepared for Russian aristocracy in Ivan IV (1530-1584) period into Korean and organized the release with more than 300 illustrations and photos taken by himself in Russia through the research.

Professor Kim Sang-hyun said, “While history focused on Western Europe and the logic of Coldwar is still remaining these days, it is fortunate to have the opportunity to introduce Russia with the achievements of valuable literature of Russian customs and cultural reports released.”


Kim Sung-soo, professor at undergraduate university, studied overall 85,000 pages of the passage of 『Chosun Literature』 (1946-2019), a literary magazine representing North Korean literature, in 『Viewing North Korean Literature again in Media: Literature and Cultural History of Chosun Literature』. By analyzing the literary magazine dynamically spread for 74 years by ‘media reading method’, he newly examines the media characteristics of North Korean literature adapted to the propaganda system of the party and the country, and was recognized for its achievements in reaching various life scenes of North Koreans in addition to North Korean leaders and party propaganda.


Professor Kim Sung-soo said, "If North Korea residents’ old lives are restored to literary works published in the media, a new perception of North Korea, which has been image-made only with loyalty to the party and leader, is possible. It is expected that these academic achievements will gather to overcome division and open the way for emotional integration and Korean cultural history to pray for peace.” Also, he expressed his gratitude by saying “I would like to thank the teachers of the Central Library of SKKU for their great help in this study by operating a special data room that archived data of North Korea.”


Professor Kim Chung-seop of the Department of Pharmacy was selected for the field of science and engineering (establishment of the foundation for scientific research) under the performance name of 『Discovery of New Microbiome Metabodies Related to Human Health and Diseases』. Professor Kim Chung-seop first identified new metabolites produced from E. coli, a very common intestinal microorganism existing in 90% of humans, and its biosynthetic pathway and was credited by finding that these metabolites are the causative agents of certain diseases (colorectal cancer, infectious disease, immune disease), and announced in total of four papers (ACS Cent. Sci., Cell Chem. Biol., Nat. Microbiol., Bioorg. Med. Chem. Lett.)


He said, "I am very happy to be selected as one of the 50 best qualities of the Ministry of Education. Microbiome is a key research field for future healthcare, and I think it will become a game changer that will change the treatment paradigm in the future. We will make more efforts to develop new microbiome-related drugs and revitalize the bio-industry.”
