The Dept. of Child Psychology and Education's graduate school arranged an external faculty panel for dissertation evaluation, as one of a number of internationalization activities.

 

On Dec. 6th (Tue), Dr. Desmond Runyan, Head of the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse & Neglect at the University of Colorado, will visit SKKU's Social Science Campus in order to evaluate the dissertation of student Sang Won KIM (advising professor: Yang Hee LEE) which is entitled; The role of social capital and childrens exposure to violence.

 

Prof. Yang Hee LEE and Dr. Runyan have been working on joint research together at ISPCAN (International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect). This led Dr. Runyan to become the advising professor of Sang Won KIM over a 6 month period as a part of BK21 program; and participate in an external faculty panel for dissertation evaluation.

 

The Kempe Center, which is located on the University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical campus, is a world renowned research institute, especially for abuse. The center was named after Dr. Kempe who introduced the “The Battered Child Syndrome” in 1972.

 

Dr. Runyan joined the Colorado faculty in August of 2011 after 32 years at the University of North Carolina. At North Carolina, he rose to the rank of professor in the departments of Social Medicine and Pediatrics, and served as chair of Social Medicine from 1999-2007. Runyan completed his MD degree and a pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota. He followed that with a doctorate in public health and the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at the University of North Carolina. He is board certified in pediatrics and in preventive medicine.

 

The Dept. of Child Psychology is actively supporting students to develop their global capabilities in humanity, research, and field experience in harmony.

 

Dr. Runyan will also give a presentation on a “Child’s right to hear his/her opinion as a child protection system through multidisciplinary approach” on Dec 7th (Wed) 10AM – 12:30PM at the 8th meeting room (room #211).
