“Every year, people in Yullchon District throw a party for elderly people with food they prepared from their hearts.  This may qualify for the Guinness World Book of Records.”

A party for 2,000 elders living in Yullchon District has held on May 21st at Sungkyunkwan University’s gym.  Most of the parties hosted by Community Service Centers have buffets.  However, people in Yullchon serve their elders with food prepared themselves.  The main menu of this year was ox head rice soup.  Preparation for this meal proceeded 3 prior to the event with the boiling of 16 ox heads in front of the Community Service Center.  A community representative said “Yullchon District has a large number of elderly people compared to other districts.  To show them respect, every year we throw a party with food prepared ourselves.”

This party started with a performance by a Nanta team.  Next, a choir consisting of parents and students from Yuljeon Elementary School sang.  After the perfromances, there was a ‘Filial Conduct’ award ceremony.  This year, Kim, Chunwhan won the prize for supporting his mother who is suffering from cancer.  After one more song from the community service representatives, they had lunch.  The party closed with signing contest for elders.

Kim, Jeongdong, who supervised this party, said “Thanks to the kind volunteers from our district who helped, we were able to successfully throw this party.”  Another representative said, “I will strive to continue and develop this party and make this our tradition which will promote harmony in our community.”
