On July 17, Mrs. Lee Ok-han(85) who is the mother of an alumnus, the late Jeong Sun-yong (Electronic engineering enter in 1984 ) and four friends who had the pleasure of studying with Mr. Jeong in college, paid a courtesy call to Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) president, Chung Kyu Sang to donate 500 million won for the scholarship of financially challenging students.

This donation was following the late alumnus’s wish to aid the development of his juniors which Mrs. Lee carried out in memory of her late son, despite her own financial limitations.
“My good son’s sudden and crippling accident happened 3 months before the end of his military service, and since then I have lived as his hands and feet for 28 years” Mrs. Lee declared, and said “this scholarship is the culmination of 28 years of veterans pension he received after being recognized for his meritorious service by the government, which he and I have saved sedulously.” With her remark participants were left somber.

Even though the late alumnus was diagnosed with being paralyzed from the waist down because of the accident, he was able to attend lectures even at the 4th floor, on a wheel-chair with the help of his friends. After graduation, he worked at a computer assembly company that paid well, 1 million won per month. Though there were no facilities for the handicapped at his job, he worked hard and perservered. But after 3 years his body was unable to take it and fell ill, and for the last 23 years he under took adialytic therapy to fight it, but he eventually succumbed to the illness and passed away the previous month.

“We deeply appreciation this honorable deed to aid your late son’s juniors in college after such a great loss” “And, in keeping to the wishes of our late alumnus, we ensure you that we will do our utmost in rearing graduates of the highest standard” asserted President Chung.

Mrs. Lee recalls her son always saying “I don’t feel good in receiving money from the government, I want to repay this debt.” She also recalled that “The memory of his college years which was the last time he could walk freely, was especially dear to my son. So I had no hestitation when I was donating, this fund of 500 million won.”

With this money the university newly established the ‘Jeong Sun-yong Scholarship’, and to keep with the wishes of the late alumnus, will be aiding the student with financial difficulties who live with distinct purpose and vision in their lives. In addition a ‘Jeong Sun-yong lecture room will be erected in the College of Infrormation and Communication Engineering to honor the noble idea of the late alumus.

Alumnus Jeong was buried in the National Cemetery and his 49 jae (funeral rites commenced for 49 days after the funeral) was commenced at the Central Veterans Hospital Veterans temple in Dunchon-dong on August 11 at 10 a.m..
