There were many university students wearing confucian scholar attire such as Yugeon(confucian scholar’s hat), Korean full-dress attire in jade color and Chungkeumbok(confucian scholar’s school uniform in myeongnyun-dong, Seoul on March 3. The group of freshman wearing Yugeon gave snacks to senior wearing Chungkeumbok.

This greeting ceremony of junior-senior is reenacting of ‘shinbangrye’ which is Sungkyunkwan University’s welcome party for the freshman. This is a ceremony that shinrae(freshman) entering Sungkyunkwan after passsing gwageo receive congratulation and give sancks to sungin(senior).

‘Confucianist culture planning group’ which contain 11 SKKU students made shinbangrye reenacted in 600 years. They don’t want to give welcome party for the freshman such as drinking party or punishing. They want to leave meaningful memory for freshman. As a result, they thought it was shinbangrye. It is ideal for succeeding traditional culture and delivering ancestor’s true behavior about study.

This day event followed the way about 600 years ago. Freshman did alsungrye(introducing confucian saints to start of study) and eup(greeting with banding waist).

Participating students showed their thumb when they saw beautiful color of traditional dress and pious ceremony. “I worried that there is offering alcohol welcome party for the freshman, but it help me to understand tradition of SKKU.” said freshman Choe Yujin. “The close relationship between freshman and senior was impressed to me.” said exchange student.
