January is Seoul’s coldest month, but that didn’t scare away the 112 students enrolled in the Winter International Student Experience (WISE) run by Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU).

This year’s inaugural WISE program attracted a diverse set of international students representing 15 foreign countries, including Germany, Australia, France, Taiwan, China, Netherlands, Singapore, Canada, Indonesia, Brazil, Switzerland, Mexico, Nepal, and Finland. These international students make up roughly 30 percent of the total enrollment. Many already previously studied at SKKU during the fall 2014 semester, and many others arrived in Korea for the first time this month.

The 2015 WISE kicked off with an orientation for international students on Tuesday, January 6. After speeches by the Office of International Affairs staff, the students went on a tour of the old Sungkyunkwan campus grounds, followed by a samgyetang lunch in Bukchon Hanok Village and a walk through Insadong, then a taekwondo lesson at Arirang Taekwondo and attending a performance of the popular nonverbal musical play Nanta.

WISE runs from January 6 to 28, offering students four courses. The business course focusing on Samsung’s core strengths is taught by Uhm Kyu, nicknamed “Mr PC” for his 30 years of executive experience at the electronics giant. The technology course taught by SKKU Professor Navrati Saxena takes students into their smart phones, examining the technology at the macro and micro level. The Korean culture class, instructed by Professor Jang Youngeun, looks at the global spread of Korean cultural products. There are also Korean language courses for international students.

Two weekend excursions are also planned for WISE students. On January 10, students will travel to Hwacheon County in Gangwon Province to participate in the popular Sancheoneo Ice Festival, where they can fish for mountain trout and participate in a variety of winter events. On January 17, WISE travels to Jeonju Hanok Village to immerse themselves in traditional culture.
