Small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) receive a record high amount of technology transfers from universities, and Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) is Korea’s second-highest contributor.

Studies have shown that SMEs received 20 times more technology from universities in Korea than large conglomerates in 2013. The University and Industry Collaboration Study Report was compiled by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in cooperation with the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) by studying university/industry collaborative activities of 423 post-secondary institutes nationwide.

According to the report, in 2013 the total number of technology transfer contracts made by universities with SMEs reached 1,979 and with venture companies was 298, for a combined total of 2,277. In contrast, only 115 contracts were made between universities and large corporations. SKKU had made 86 technology transfer contracts, second only to Seoul National University’s 104. The total number of technology transfers made by universities, not excluding nonprofits, was 2,584, an 89.3 percent increase from 2009’s 1,365 transfers.

“Universities are making a bigger business contribution for SMEs than for conglomerates,” said an MOE official.
