SKKU’s Institute of Anglo-American Cultural Studies (Director Hyesook Son) announced that it newly offers a new “Meditation and Healing” lecture in 2022 for undergraduate students. This lecture is a follow-up to “MBSR Meditation”, which was offered in 2021 and received a lot of attention and response from students. It is a subject that combines meditation and healing with specific themes.

Director Hyesook Son, a lecturer, medication leader, and biblio/poetry therapy expert, presented “loving-kindness” and “compassion” as the theme of “Meditation and Healing” in 2022. Director Son introduced the purpose of the lecture by saying, “Cultivating loving-kindness and compassion for oneself and others is very helpful in overcoming stress, anxiety, and depression in COVID-19 era and developing spontaneity, creativity, and imagination.” She added that students who take the “Meditation and Healing” lecture will be able to accept themselves and the world with an open mind, heal pain with kindness, empathy, and deep understanding, restore self-esteem, and cultivate positive emotions through systematic training and curriculum.

“Meditation and Healing” presents a comprehensive, systematic, and scientific humanities healing methodology that compasses verbal and non-verbal areas by combining mindfulness and meditation. Students practice mindfulness meditation and develop basic physical strength of the mind to restore self-esteem and emotions fundamentally and continuously through art healing programs using biblio/poetry. Director Son said, “‘Meditation and Healing’ is a subject that reflects the tradition of Sungkyunkwan University and the spirit of educational innovation, and will be a time of experience with depth, joy, diversity, and emotion.”

“Meditation and Healing” is an innovative course that combined mindfulness meditation and biblio/poetry therapy. The effect and mechanism of meditation in the Anglo-American region were proved and verified through scientific methods such as brain wave, fMRI, and psychological measurement tools in the late 20th century, and formed programs, including MBSR(Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction), MBCT(Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy), MSC(Mindful Self-Compassion).

Biblio/poetry therapy is a representative art therapy methodology of the 21st century that actively utilizes various literature styles, centering on a symbol of language, metaphors, images, etc., and is operated as a certification program organized by the International Federation for Biblio/Poetry Therapy.

SKKU’s Institute of Anglo-American Cultural Studies will not only open new courses but also sign an MOU with Ulsan University’s College of Medicine starting this year to provide a class model tailored to medical schools, and will continue to develop and distribute various programs combining meditation and healing models.
