SKKU College of Confucian Studies invited Professor Philip J. IVANHOE as a chair-professor.

Prof. IVANHOE studied philosophy and Chinese in Stanford University and became influenced by experts in Chinese philosophy and comparative religion such as David S. NIVISON and Lee H. EARLEY. After receiving his doctorate degree in Stanford, he taught at many distinguished universities such as Stanford, Michigan and Boston. He was also a chair-professor at City University of Hong Kong.

Prof. IVANHOE is well-acquainted with East Asian philosophy/religion and he stressed that it opens new opportunities for modern study of ethics and political philosophy. IVANHOE is famous for claiming that Neo-Confucian scholars such as WANG Yangming and ZHU Xi have misinterpreted ancient Confucianists such as Confucius and Mencius. His book “Confucian Moral Self Cultivation” was translated by SKKU professor Junggeun SHIN in 2009.

Prof. IVANHOE is one of western scholars who are interested in Korean philosophy; he compiled books such as “Tradition Korean Philosophy: Problems and Debates” and “Three Streams: Confucian Reflections on Learning and the Moral Heart-Mind in China, Korea, and Japan”. He is currently finishing the translation of books written by female Neo-Confucianists such as LIM Yoonjidang and KANG Jungildang.

Prof. IVANHOE has taken a heavy responsibility as the editor of “Journal of Confucian Philosophy and Culture” and the director of Sungkyun Institute for Confucian Studies and East Asian Philosophy to establish the foundation for the international research institute.
