SKKU Prof. Jeon Byeung-woo, Department of Electric Electronics, succeeds in securing a standard patent in High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) through collaboration with SKKU Research & Business Foundation(Headed by Executive Vice President Yoo Ji-beom).

The announcement was made by the Research & Business Foundation’s  Center for Technology Transfer on April 8.

HEVC is a standard technique that compresses mass video data efficiently, and can be applied to UHD TVs, UHD smart phones, black boxes, digital camcoders and digital cameras. It is capable of twice the agglomeration rate than existing standard techniques. Through this not only do they earn a patent fee but also secure a leading position in the development of ultra high definition display research.

“Many people see images and take pictures using UHD TV or smart phones, which use up a lot of battery.” said Prof. Jeon. “The idea to improve battery efficiency through software is how all of this began”

Standard patents mostly are owned by private companies that are in constant competition for technological superiority, Especially the field of ultra high definition display and data relaying is where global companies like Samsung, LG, and Sony are competing in.

“Inventions are not just mere ideas or inspirations, and can not be made by the inventors alone” says Prf. Jeon. “the ability of the patent support team to document it, claiming it, and compare it with different technologies is very important”.
