Professor Sun Wng Kim, Develops World’s First ‘Two Dimensional Electride’

Domestic research team and the faculty of Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan succeeded in developing the world’s very first ‘two dimensional Electride’ that includes a layer that only consists of electrons which function as a negative ion. Along with the recently emerged Graphene, this new material is valued as the ‘second dream material’ as it opens up a new chapter of new quantum material/matter research.

This research operated by Professor Sung Wng Kim of SungKyunKwan University (SKKU), Professor Hideo Hosono’s research team and Post-doctoral researcher Gimun Lee of Tokyo Institute of Technology, was published in the online version of Nature on January 31.

Although the two dimensional Electride is structurally similar with bed structure materials such as h-BN and MoS2, Professor Sun Wng Kim succeeded in developing the world’s very first two dimensional Electride, a bed structured material, through the electronic route that use a layer only made up of electrons in stratified space rather than between layers.

Professor Kim, Sung Wng said that “the significance of this research is the success of developing a once thought impossible, two dimensional electride as well as expanding a group of electride substances to a nitride” and added that “this opens up the possibility of transparent electrode, energy conversion thermoelectric material and catalyst material, which is difficult with Graphene”.
