“Panasia: Pan Asia Project” with SKKU, Peking and Waseda

  • 160 students from SKKU, Peking University and Waseda University are in Jeju Island
  • Students share history and culture to foster friendship 
  • Students hike 30 km daily

On August 8th, the Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) Student Council kicked off its “Panasia” event with 30 students from Peking University, China, 30 students from Waseda University, Japan and 100 students from SKKU. It is the first time the event is being held. The event will last until August 18th.

Besides hiking, students study ways of resolving conflicts in the three East Asian countries, including important issues like the division of the Korean peninsula and maritime territorial disputes. Students will also learn about the globalization of student culture, especially that of Korea. These activities together will create the Peace Ambassador Network of Asia.  

While hiking 30 km daily and spending 10 days together, students will gain an international mindset and deepen their understanding of each other. International understanding is further nurtured through a variety of cultural and performance activities, including making Korean food, friendly sports events and the International Forum of Peace.

 

SeongHae Joe (23, Political Science and Diplomacy, SKKU), a leader who planned the whole event said that “I am very much interested in relationship between Korea, China and Japan, so I have been meeting them from various exchange programs” and added that “although we are from different countries, we all are all Asian and students. The exchange between us starts from communication based on understanding and sympathy.”

He also claimed that “the younger generation has much more possibilities solving the chronic conflicts from history and cultural differences amongst Korea, China and Japan. Instead of logically judging between right and wrong, we should understand each other and harmonize.”
