Professor Emeritus Kyung Shik Lee (also known by the pen name Lee Si Kyung) from the College of Information and Communication Engineering has published a new book titled "Speaking Mathematics in Poetry."

In this book, Professor Lee, a respected figure in the field of Information and Communication Engineering, creatively explains mathematical concepts with the addition of poetry, making it an enjoyable read for both students and enthusiasts alike. The book provides an easy-to-understand introduction to the birth and evolution of numbers, which are considered the roots of mathematics and science. It also shares intriguing stories about several known sequences and encourages readers to imagine the mysteries hidden within countless undiscovered sequences.

The book delves into the concept of "differentiation," often regarded as the flower of mathematics, and explains the notions of "solutions" and "mathematical modeling" using natural and physical phenomena. Additionally, it demonstrates how mechanical or electrical systems in our surroundings can be described by differential equations, illustrating how everyday problems can be approached mathematically.

Throughout the book, various topics are covered, including the COVID-19 pandemic, fluctuations in the stock market, the waves of Homo sapiens, and the story of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Readers will also encounter the author's perspectives on life, viewing it as "human waves," and how he approaches society as a "human circuit network," solving problems mathematically.

The main text of the book is divided into two parts, comprising a total of nine chapters. The first part primarily focuses on fundamental mathematics familiar to everyone, presented in an easily accessible manner, while the second part delves into natural phenomena around us, and engineering problems viewed through a mathematical lens.

Professor Kyung Shik Lee recalled, "I came up with the idea of incorporating poetry into my math lectures one day while teaching rigid engineering courses. When I introduced poetry as supplementary material while explaining important mathematical concepts, I noticed a gradual increase in students' attention." He further expressed his intention for writing "Speaking Mathematics in Poetry" as an effort to spark interest in readers who shy away from or find mathematics challenging. He hopes that through this book, readers will come to recognize that "mathematics is not only interesting but also has a significant impact on our lives, both now and in the future."
