Law School of SKKU, Signs Exchange Agreement with Law School of SWUPL On 30 July 2012, Law School of Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) signed a friendly exchange agreement with the Law School of Southwest University of Political Science and Law (SWUPL) which is located in Chongqing, China, to enhance the relationship between two universities as well as improve academic and cultural exchange. Prof. Shijinghai and Director Tangil of SWUPL Law School; and Director Ki-sik Sonn, Vice Director Kwang-Min Park, Prof. Kyu Sang Chung, Prof. Sang Hyun Oh were present at the signing ceremony of the Exchange Agreement. The main context of this agreement includes faculty, researchers, and student exchange. In accordance to the signed agreement, both universities will exchange students starting from 2012 fall semester.

“Panasia: Pan Asia Project” with SKKU, Peking and Waseda 160 students from SKKU, Peking University and Waseda University are in Jeju Island Students share history and culture to foster friendship Students hike 30 km daily On August 8th, the Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) Student Council kicked off its “Panasia” event with 30 students from Peking University, China, 30 students from Waseda University, Japan and 100 students from SKKU. It is the first time the event is being held. The event will last until August 18th. Besides hiking, students study ways of resolving conflicts in the three East Asian countries, including important issues like the division of the Korean peninsula and maritime territorial disputes. Students will also learn about the globalization of student culture, especially that of Korea. These activities together will create the Peace Ambassador Network of Asia. While hiking 30 km daily and spending 10 days together, students will gain an international mindset and deepen their understanding of each other. International understanding is further nurtured through a variety of cultural and performance activities, including making Korean food, friendly sports events and the International Forum of Peace. SeongHae Joe (23, Political Science and Diplomacy, SKKU), a leader who planned the whole event said that “I am very much interested in relationship between Korea, China and Japan, so I have been meeting them from various exchange programs” and added that “although we are from different countries, we all are all Asian and students. The exchange between us starts from communication based on understanding and sympathy.” He also claimed that “the younger generation has much more possibilities solving the chronic conflicts from history and cultural differences amongst Korea, China and Japan. Instead of logically judging between right and wrong, we should understand each other and harmonize.” Finally he ambitiously said that “the ‘Panasia’ should be more than a one-time event. SKKU Leaps to #297 Academic Ranking of World Universities Sunkyunkwan University (SKKU) advanced to #297 on the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2012 conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). SKKU has leaped 15 ranks compared to #312 ranking last year and entered into the 200s list of world’s top universities. "ACE of ACE" Becoming A Global Leading University Interim Evaluation of Undergraduate Education Advancement Project – Selected as the best university on Annual Assessment Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) has been selected as the best university on the ‘Advanced College of Education (ACE Project)’ conducted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. SKKU has also been selected as the best university on last year’s annual assessment and credited as “Ace of Ace” the best teaching university. SKKU has been working on a concrete plan for the past 3 years to create and expand the advanced model of undergraduate education through innovation and development of overall undergraduate education. Undergraduate Education Advancement Project of SKKU is composed of overall advancement plan of undergraduate education following the value creation process (input, process, output and performance). Specifically, contents are 1.) redefining of the standard of SKKU’s talented individual and core competencies, 2.) applying it to selection of SKKU’s future talent, 3.) reforming the liberal arts course based on the core competencies, 4.) Expanding convergent major programs and advanced/opened Bachelors structure, 5.) providing non-curricular programs such as leadership program and innovation school 6.) implementing personalized teaching and learning support system including significant expansion of TA, and bachelor's guidance counselor expertise (Academic Advisor), and 7.) systemic spread of sharing and refluxing the business performance such as scientific assessment of education performance and management of education quality including higher education centers for effectiveness of education. The president of ACE Project Jun-Mo Cho (vice president of Academic Affairs) said “Sungkyunkwan University will maximize its potential and take advantage of it to upgrade its undergraduate education. Also, it will create synergy and feasibility through the connecting undergraduate education with other sector development plans” and added “Sungkyunkwan University will contribute to the quality development of Korean higher education by sharing the fruitful outcome of the ACE project.”

2012 International Summer Semester 1400 Student Participants - Sungkyungkwan University 5th International Summer Semester, 2012 - 34 countries, 73 universities 1443 students participating - Global standard lectures by 20 professors throughout 4 weeks - Various cultural activities such as ‘Nanta’ performance, Seoul tour, Place tour Just five years after the very first International Summer Semester (ISS), the participating number of students has reached 1400, including 800 foreign students. ISS, which runs from June 28 to July 25 this year, has a total of 1443 students from 73 universities and 34 countries. The number is astonishing compared to the 302 students in 2008, the first ISS. This is the result of Sungkyunkwan University’s (SKKU) internationalization efforts to become a global leading university. Foreign students take great interest in SKKU ISS due to the original theme (This year’s theme is ‘Sustainable Global Values’ and in last year, the theme was ‘Recovery & Prosperity: Post Crisis & New Future) and 22 outstanding professors including Charles Hampden-Turner Prof. of Cambridge University, Dann Sklarew, Prof. of George Mason University providing 31 subjects. Furthermore, students can take up to maximum 6 credits and achieve ‘major-specialty’ credits and ‘International course’ credits for the ISS courses categorized as the student’s major. Another merit of ISS is the opportunity to experience global level education along while exchanging with international students and participate in various cultural activities. For instance, on June 28th students visit the old campus of Sungkyunkwan in Myeongnyundang, June 29th students will wear traditional Korean costume ‘Hanbok’ and learn Korean etiquette, visit 4 Korean palaces and enjoy ‘Nanta’ performance, July 11th hold the International Food Festival, July 18th Global Forum, July 23rd visit Fold Village and Incheon pottery village, July 24th attend the Boryeong Mud Festival. KANEKA / SKKU Incubation Center International Symposium 2012 *** On June 12th 2012 (Tuesday), SKKU is holding the "KANEKA/SKKU Incubation Center-International Symposium 2012" at the Natural Sciences Campus. Invited lecturers are Ph.D. RIKEN Yoshiharu Doi, the prominent scholar in the field of Bio plastic and Nanomaterials development; as well as Prof. Jung-Il Jin, professor emeritus at Korea University and former chairman of IUPAC. Also, Prof. Takao Someya of University of Tokyo, who was introduced on ‘Nature, Science’ for his work in next generation display development; and Prof. Kazuo Takimiya of Hiroshima University; Prof. Take-Woo Lee have all accepted the invite. SKKU- South Dakota State Univ. Signs Student Exchange Agreement On Tuesday May 8th 2012, Mr. Kim Jae Hyun the dean of Computer Education Major, College of Education, Sungkyunkwan University and Mr. Steven Hietpas the dean of Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of South Dakota State University signed the Student Exchange Agreement. Mr. Steven Hietpas and group of guests visited Sungkyunkwan University for this singing ceremony and discussed the detailed plans of exchange between two universities. After the singing ceremony, Professor Shin Sung Yoon, Graduate Coordinator of the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of South Dakota State University held a special lecture for Computer Education major students of Sungkyunkwan University. The special lecture covered introduction of university and graduate school admissions.

SKKU Participate in 2012 NAFSA: Association of International Educators Dr. Dong-ok Cha, Vice President of SKKU International Affairs, participated in NAFSA held from May 28 to June 1 in Huston, US. Dr. Cha put in a great deal of effort to increase SKKU global positioning through poster presentation and promotional booths. By holding meetings more than 120 universities from 30 countries; including not only the existing partner universities from Germany, France, Netherland, Finland, Sweden, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, China and Taiwan but also meeting potential new partner universities such as University of California, Boston University, University of San Diego, University of Houston, San Francisco State University, Western Illinois University in US, Macquarie University, University of Queensland in Australia, Dublin City University, University of Abertay Dundee in UK, and AUT, University of Auckland in New Zealand, Dr. Cha discussed on how to establish a firm cooperative relationship in the future and find ways to expand exchange. In addition, SKKU was able to promote the QS-APPLE Conference, which is scheduled to held at SKKU in 2013 as well as increasing the global recognition of SKKU by participating in the association.

President of University of Maryland Visits Sungkyunkwan University * Agreement of academic exchange for continuous exchanges between the two universities * Provide foothold for the positive international exchange On June 15 (Friday) Wallace D. Loh, President of University of Maryland, United States of America, visited Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU). President Loh met Dr. Dong-ok Cha, Vice President of SKKU International Affairs and Jun-Young Kim, President of SKKU. They discussed about exchanges between the two universities and signed the agreement of academic exchange (MOU). In addition, they continue to explore ways for various exchanges, such as exchanges of students and researches, double degree programs, Etc. In particular, professor Seung-Kyung Kim, Director of East Asian Studies at the University of Maryland, showed great interest in the excellent programs and research of SKKU’s East Asian Studies, and wished for a continuous reinforcement of university partnership. University of Maryland (University of Maryland-College Park) is a state university located in Maryland. It is world class University, ranked No.55 in the United States and No.94 in the world.
