제 69회 해외학자 초청강연


안녕하십니까!
 
동양철학과 BK21플러스 사업단에서는 이번 학기 해외학자 초청 강연에 최도빈 박사님(The University of Iowa, Visiting Assistant Professor)을 초청했습니다. 
 
최도빈 박사님은 서울대학교 미학과에서 학부와 석사를 마치셨으며, 미국  뉴욕주립대학교(버팔로) 철학과에서 "Sentimentalist Virtue Theories of Mengzi and Hume"으로 박사학위를 받으셨습니다. 현재 미국 아이오와 대학교 철학과의 초빙교수로 서양철학과 동양철학을 강의하고 계십니다. 미학에 관련된 주요 저서로는 『새로운 예술을 꿈꾸는 사람들』, 『철학의 눈으로 본 현대 예술』 이 있으며,  비교철학 연구로는 "Moral Artisanship in Mengzi 6A7" (Dao,  2018), "The Heart of Compassion in Mengzi 2A6 " (Dao, 2019), "Mengzi's Maxim for Righteousness in Mengzi 2A2" (Dao, 2019) 등이 있습니다. 

최도빈 박사님은 맹자와 흄의 비교연구를 계속 해오고 있으시며, 이번 강연도 그 연장선상에서 흄의 철학과의 비교를 통해 유교 차별애가 내적 덕의 수양과 어떻게 관계될 수 있는지를  탐색하시고자 합니다. 이번 강연은 한국어로 진행될 예정입니다. 강의 자료(영문)를 아래에 첨부하였습니다. 아무쪼록 많은 관심과 참여 부탁드립니다.   

▣ 강연영문초록In this essay, I propose a reason why Confucians are convinced that their principles of “caring with distinctions” and “love with gradation” enable people to develop their internal states enough to achieve the genuine virtue of humaneness (ren). Does a person’s concentration on love towards parents and caring for them necessarily improve his or her internal states to have virtuous characters in the long run? To answer this question, I apply David Hume’s analysis of the passions of benevolence and compassion to Mengzi’s particular and general hearts of compassion (ceyin zhi xin), and argue that these Confucian principles are designed to maximize the stimulation of agents’ original patterns, or the natural cause of moral sentiments in the mind. Their continuous and intense stimulation lead agents to recognize the mental foundation for the virtue of humanity, which enables their internal development.
