SKKU Wins Consecutive Awards at the Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers

(Department of Industrial Engineering, Department of Systems Management Engineering)

- General Graduate Student, Tae Wook Kim (Department of Industrial Engineering)

wins the ‘Best Master’s Degree Thesis Award’

- Prof. Donghee Lee (Department of Systems Management Engineering)

 wins the ‘KIIE Globalization Award’

General graduate school student, Tae Wook Kim (Department of Industrial Engineering, Advisor: Prof. Jong Seok Lee), was awarded the Best Master’s Degree Thesis award of 2022 KIIE Fall Academic contest held in Incheon, November 4 (Fri).

The Master’s Degree Thesis award has been granted annually ever since its establishment in 2005, aiming to foster human resource development by encouraging graduate school research activities, and had its 18th award granted this year. In this contest, over 40 papers were submitted and the awardee was determined through two staged filtering in which the first stage (double-blind evaluation) already filters them down to 10 papers and the second stage of the final decision.

Graduate School Student, Tae Wook Kim introduced a method to detect data distribution outside trained data so that AI can react to an unprecedented pattern in his thesis with the title ‘Overconfidence relaxation for out-of-distribution samples via hypersphere embedding and weight regularization’. He designed a new loss function to train for discriminative properties and in that particular property space, creating a smooth classification margin among classes is the main idea of the research.

He said, “I am very honored to receive such a meaningful award. With this award as a new motivation, I’d like to devote myself more to research so I can bring honor to my school as a system management engineer, and produce research results applicable to actual industries, based on theoretical research.”

On the other hand, Prof. Donghee Lee (Department of Systems Management Engineering) was honored with the ‘Globalization Award’ from the same academic contest.

The Globalization Award, established in 2013, determines its awardee by calculating the number of international journals published citing papers from KIIE-issued academic journals, ‘Korean Industrial Engineering Journal’ and ‘Industrial Engineering & Management Systems', adding the number of citation counts of the thesis. This award was designated to appreciate the globalization of KIIE by introducing domestic research results overseas.

Prof. Lee focuses on quality engineering methods using 4th industrial technology and contributes to enhancing the quality competitiveness of companies by conducting industry-academic research and courses for Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Hyundai Motors, etc.

Prof. Lee commented, “Research on the 4th industrial technology is actively being conducted worldwide, and this trend was clearly seen in two journals representing industrial engineering in Korea, and the results of domestic research were confirmed to be world-class.”
