 Professor Min Chul Kim (Department of History) publishes ‘Ekaterina Letter Collection’


Professor Min Chul Kim (Department ofHistory) recently published a translation of ‘The Ekaterina Letter Collection.’This is the fourth book of publisher Idda’s ‘correspondence’ series, which contains letters written by the Russian Empress in the 18th century,also known as enlightenment lord Ekaterina II, to the people that led the politics, ideology, and cultures of Russia and Europe in enlightenment period: French writer Voltaire, Mathematician, and Philosopher d’Alembert, Sculptor Falconet, Owner of a Salon and an intellect Madame Geoffrin.


Ekaterina II achieved her throne of thev ast empire by force and thus was not the legitimate heir to the throne. Her gender undermined her position even more. To resolve these difficulties, she tried letter politics and this book portrays its complications of it vividly. At the end of the book, bibliographic notes and chronologies by the translatorare included to let the readers understand the political and social context of 18th century Russia.


Professor Min Chul, Kim, is studying history of French Revolution and modern Europe mentality, usually publishing papers and translations about republicanism, natural law, democracy, and commerce of Western Europe in French Revolution period. Afterwards, he will publish history of democracy at the perspective of history of mentality with publisher Changbi.
