Prior to the 11th “Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest” held in Beijing, China on April 28th, the director of the event Prof. Myunghak LEE published a book titled, “10 years of Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest”. “The background of the publication is to reflect on the past achievements and prepare for the next decade“ said Prof. LEE.
Professor Myunghak LEE elaborated, “I received a message from a Chinese professor in 2007 that there are more than 60 universities that established Korean language department in response to the rise of “Korean Wave”. The problem was that it didn’t receive any support from the university nor the Korean government. So I thought of starting the Korean writing contest for a continuous support for Korean language learners.”
He believed that students will learn about the Korean history and culture along with the written language. Prof. LEE discussed with the university to give full-covered scholarship to the winner of the writing contest and opened the first writing contest in 2007 commemorating the 15th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and China.
Since 2008, Sungkyun Writing Contest had been held in other regions such as Central Asia, Vietnam, Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe.
