Top 10 News of SKKU in 2020 


 ○ Response to the COVID-19 Crisis Through Cutting-edge Educational Infrastructure 


SKKU conducted its classes in a safe environment based on advanced educational infrastructure while proactively responding to the COVID-19 crisis that hit the whole world this year. SKKU provided supports in various ways, including operation of quick response team, supply of equipment and technology support for producing contents, so that professors can conduct classes without any problems. Additionally, about 550 million won of ‘student success-steppingstone scholarship’ was provided to students suffering from the COVID-19 and 100,000 won were given to all students except for full scholarship recipients. Moreover, the university carried out its social responsibilities through the promotion of research on the COVID-19, holding online seminars, and opening of Ex-campus.


○ No. 1 BK21 Phase IV Among Private Universities 


In the Phase IV of BK21 project, as a total of 32 educational research institutes/teams were selected from our university, it ranked first in private universities. The Phase of BK21 project is a project to support research scholarships for graduate students and labor costs for new research personnel so that researchers in next generation can concentrate on their studies and research. About 2.9 trillion won will be spent over seven years from September 2020. In addition, since more than five educational research institutes were selected from SKKU, it will receive additional support for graduate school innovation.


○ Simsan-gil, Designated as the Honorary Road 


SKKU and Jongno-gu designated the legal road name of Sungkyunhkwan-ro 5-gil as ‘Simsan-gil’ to honor Simsan’s patriotism and educational contribution. The name of ‘Simsan-gil’ was named after a pen name of Chang-sook Kim who was an independence activist against Japanese Imperialism and took a lead in reconstruction of Sungkyunkwan University. Using the designation of the ‘Simsan-gil’, honorary road, as a driving force, SKKU plans to turn its university campus into a space where traditional and high-tech, and humanities and start-ups coexist.


○ Successful Operation of First Challenge Semester


SKKU successfully operated the challenge semester that was newly introduced thisyear by having 5,500 participants. The challenge semester is the program thatwas introduced to provide various programs by extending the period of summerbreak as 3 months. It consists academic curriculum, extracurricular activities,internship, and international exchange programs, and all of them are free of charge. Due to the COVID-19, the international exchange programs were notoperated, and curriculum and extracurricular programs were conducted 100% online for this semester.


○ Establishmentof Quantum Information Research Support Center


SKKU openedthe Quantum Information Research Support Center to build research developmentecosystem in August 2020. The Ministry of Science and ICT is pushing for aproject to create quantum information science R&D ecosystem in order to promotethe quantum information science research and plans to invest about 49 billion won from this year to 2024. SKKU Professor Yeon-Wook Jeong (SKKU Advanced Institute of Nano Technology) was appointed as the director of the center. Startingwith the opening of the center, SKKU plans to accelerate its plan to foster high-quality manpower in the field of quantum information. 


○ SKKU Professors, Dong-In Kim, Keunchil Park, Nam-Gyu Park, Myung-Ju Ahn, Young-Hee Lee, Selected as the “World’s Top 1% Highly Cited Researchers” 


SKKU professors, Dong-InKim (Electronic and Electrical Engineering), Keunchil Park (School of Medicine), Nam-Gyu Park (School of Chemical Engineering), Myung-Ju Ahn (School of Medicine),Young-Hee Lee (Institute for Basic Science), were on the Clarivate Analytics’ annuallist of highly cited researchers. The selection of researchers was based on the top 1% of this year’s most cited papers in each field. In addition, SKKU has ranked second in the top 1% most cited articles among Korean universities.


○ SKKU-Yuhan-Imnewrun, Signed Cooperation Agreement on <Uni-Industry Convergence Brain Disease R&BD Ecosystem Establishment Project>


SKKU signed athree-way cooperation agreement with Yuhan and Imnewrun on <Uni-Industry Convergence Brain Disease R&D Ecosystem Establishment Project>. For the first time in Korea, university, pharmaceutical company, and bio venture have pushed for university-industry collaboration in the field of brain diseases. Upon this agreement, they plan to build a CNS research center, secure a project to develop a new drug, and establish a new department in the field of basic brain science. 


○ SKKU Won the 2020 AI Excellence Awards 


SKKU Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence won the ‘2020 Korea AI Excellence Awards’, which is given to Korea’s representative institutions that pioneered new industries following the fourth industrial revolution. SKKU held the first AI vision strategy declaration ceremony for domestic universities last year and is promoting top-class global AI research and education. The Graduate School of AI was established last year to foster global AI core talents and is creating new values in the era of AI with creative thinking and challenging spirit.


○ Ranked 1st for the appointment of new judicial researcher and 2nd for the ratio of graduates passing the bar exam


SKKU Law School ranked first again, by producing 20 new judicial researchers this year.The bar exam ranked second after Seoul National University, by producing 125 successful applicants. SKKU Law School has achieved excellent results inproducing judges, prosecutors, and lawyers every year based on the support ofthe school and solid faculty. 


○ No. 1 Employment Rate (77%) Among Major Universities in Seoul 


SKKU ranked the top of employment rate (77%) among major universities in Seoul with morethan 500 graduates. Among departments in SKKU, School of Medicine andDepartment of Semiconductor Systems Engineering had 100% employment rate. Withthe aim of ‘creating student success and future value’, SKKU operates an advanced curriculum to help students discover and maximize their talents through university lives, as well as systematically manage comparative and future activitiesthrough the establishment of a student success portfolio system. Furthermore, SKKU actively supports students’ employment through job fair, various consulting session, and cover letter writing center.
