Biofoundry Research Center Opened January 1st

SKKU has established the very first automated Biofoundry facility in Korea. The Biofoundry is capable of performing various biological processes and conducting multiple designed experiments without human effort in order to promote the development of novel biomaterials and microbial strains at high speed.

The Biofoundry Research Center was opened on January 1st, 2020 to develop the advanced automated platform and methods, to search novel biomaterials, to promote startup companies, and to create new biotech markets seamlessly.

Currently, SKKU’s biofoundry platform (Director, Prof. Han Min Woo) focuses on developing high impact biomaterials and microbial strains. The research project is supported by grants from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy from 2018-2021.

In December of 2019, the research team joined the Global Biofoundry Alliance and plans on participating in joint international research projects to solve major challenges.

SKKU plans to become a global leader in biofoundry research by expanding the capabilities of its facilities and adapting the cutting-edge biotechnology of metabolic engineering and synthetic biology.

Prof. Woo said, “By completing the first stage of building a biofoundry platform in Korea, we can build various microbial cells and develop new biomaterials at high speed. Near the future, our biofoundry research team will put efforts into integrating artificial intelligence technologies and analyzing big data generated from the biofoundry platform. I hope that our biofoundry will act as an incubator for unicorn startups in biomaterials.”

Diverse robot units that were installed at the Biofoundry Research Center. Researchers are conducting biological experiments and developing advanced biomaterials through computers and robotic machines.

The Biofoundry Platform allows the liquid handing of 96 samples simultaneously by using a robotic arm and multi-channel pipettes. This enables the development of advanced biomaterials at high speed.
