In the discussion session with the presidents of universities, President Dong Ryeol SHIN argued that, “the partition between each department are hindering the development of convergent talents”.

On March 12th, presidents of SKKU, Seoul National University (hereafter SNU) and Korea University met at the Maekyung Media Center in Choongmuro, Seoul. In this meeting the presidents discussed about the future of education and universities. The presidents agreed that with the current form of education which divides the curriculum to either Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences, it is impossible to nurture a talent suitable for the era of 4th industrial revolution.

President Sejeong OH of SNU said, “If students in the Liberal Arts learn about AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the university, they can apply it to their knowledge. Students are afraid to take statistics and mathematics in the university. Universities in the US demand their students to take courses outside of their discipline.”

President SHIN said, “90% of tuition go to personnel expenses and only 10% remain in our budget. 10% is not enough for investment. The Japanese government supports their universities by paying the personnel expenses while refraining from interfering their internal business. On the other hand, the Korean government provides financial support but in return gives out tasks to accomplish.”

The conclusion of the meeting was that the universities need to further enhance their commercialization of technology and receive more financial support from the government. In 2017, Stanford University (US) earned $45,400,000 from their technology while SKKU, SNU and Korea University only earned about $27,000,000 in sum.
