On September 5th at 8 AM, about 20 students were having breakfast at SKKU cafeteria. The price of the breakfast was 1,000 KRW. Gang Hyun SEO, a student at the Dept. of Business Administration said, “I was hesitant to eat breakfast because I was working as a scholarship recipient and have a living expenses totaling 500,000 KRW. However, the burden of my living expenses decreased because of the 1,000 KRW breakfast.”
SKKU’s “Love of 1,000 KRW Breakfast” has been in operation for a year. Students at the school are able to eat breakfast from 8 to 9 AM at four restaurants in the campus for 1,000 KRW. It was originally 2,500 KRW, but the university was able to lower the price through a generous donation from its alumni. Before the introduction of this campaign, the average number of students eating breakfast at the university restaurant was 160 per day. However, a year after serving the 1,000 KRW breakfast, an average of 375 people eat breakfast. The amount has doubled.
When the alumni heard that some donation funds are used for students’ breakfast, many people started to donate. The alumni were moved as the donations were reported to be used to help the students live. The total amount donated by the alumni was less than 200,000 KRW a year ago but has since risen to 145.68 million KRW.
The 1,000 KRW breakfast also linked alumni and students. Chung Gu LEE (Department of Biology, Admission year: 1958), the CEO of Unix Corporation who donated 30 million KRW last July, invited 2 students who wrote a thank you letter to his office. Mr. Lee said, “I donated because I remembered when I was in college I was sharing a lunch box with 3 friends.” Student Soo Jin LEE, who was invited to the office said, “I make living expenses from all kinds of part-time jobs such as working at a theater box office. When I passed the teacher placement test, I would like to donate to my younger students.” The 1,000 KRW breakfast started with Soonchunhyang University in 2012 and was also introduced by Seoul National University and Pusan National University.
