- Sungkyungkwan University 5th International Summer Semester, 2012
- 34 countries, 73 universities 1443 students participating

Just five years after the very first International Summer Semester (ISS), the participating number of students has reached 1400, including 800 foreign students. ISS, which runs from June 28 to July 25 this year, has a total of 1443 students from 73 universities and 34 countries. The number is astonishing compared to the 302 students in 2008, the first ISS.  This is the result of Sungkyunkwan University’s (SKKU) internationalization efforts to become a global leading university.
Foreign students take great interest in SKKU ISS due to the original theme (This year’s theme is ‘Sustainable Global Values’ and in last year, the theme was ‘Recovery & Prosperity: Post Crisis & New Future) and 22 outstanding professors including Charles Hampden-Turner Prof. of Cambridge University, Dann Sklarew, Prof. of George Mason University providing 31 subjects.
Furthermore, students can take up to maximum 6 credits and achieve ‘major-specialty’ credits and ‘International course’ credits for the ISS courses categorized as the student’s major. Another merit of ISS is the opportunity to experience global level education along while exchanging with international students and participate in various cultural activities. For instance, on June 28th students visit the old campus of Sungkyunkwan in Myeongnyundang, June 29th students will wear traditional Korean costume ‘Hanbok’ and learn Korean etiquette, visit 4 Korean palaces and enjoy ‘Nanta’ performance, July 11th hold the International Food Festival, July 18th Global Forum, July 23rd visit Fold Village and Incheon pottery village, July 24th attend the Boryeong Mud Festival.
Dr. Dong-Ok Cha, vice president of SKKU International Affairs said “ISS has become the largest summer semester in Korea due to the influence but K-pop and Korean wave but more importantly due to word-of-mouth of the outstanding professors and high quality education contents of SKKU ISS.”
