SKKU to Host Special Talk on “Living an Ethical Life”

with Global Ethicist Peter Singer

- Discussing contemporary ethical issues with Professor Emeritus Peter Singer,

author of 'Animal Liberation'

- Communicating with a world-renowned scholar to cultivate practical intelligence; simultaneous interpretation and live streaming provided

SKKU is hosting a special talk concert titled 'Living an Ethical Life' with Peter Singer, Professor Emeritus at Princeton University and a world-renowned leading figure in practical ethics, at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at Cho Byeong-du Hall in the 600th Anniversary Hall on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in Jongno-gu, Seoul.

This talk concert was organized to provide SKKU students with an opportunity to meet a world-renowned scholar in person, reflect together on complex ethical issues facing modern society, including the climate crisis, poverty, and animal rights, and explore practical solutions. The program will feature a keynote lecture by Professor Peter Singer, followed by an in-depth dialogue based on questions submitted in advance, and a real-time Q&A session in which participants on-site can freely exchange opinions.

Professor Peter Singer is considered one of the most influential figures in contemporary ethics. Through his 1975 book Animal Liberation, he popularized philosophical discussions on animal rights and is recognized for laying the theoretical foundation for the modern animal rights movement. In particular, in 2021, he received the Berggruen Prize, often called the Nobel Prize of philosophy, and has personally put his academic convictions into practice by donating the entire prize money, amounting to hundreds of millions of won, to organizations dedicated to poverty eradication and animal protection.

SKKU has prepared support measures to enable more members of the community to participate in the lecture. Considering that the entire program will be conducted in English, simultaneous interpretation receivers will be provided to attendees so that they can understand the in-depth discussions without language barriers. In addition, in preparation for a possible shortage of on-site seating, a live broadcast using the video conferencing platform Zoom will be provided in nearby classrooms.

President Ji Beom Yoo said, “I hope this will be a valuable opportunity for students to communicate directly with a world-renowned scholar, broaden the horizons of their ethical thinking, and grow as practical intellectuals,” adding, “I hope this event will be a meaningful occasion for members of the University and our community as a whole to deeply reflect on the right values we should pursue.”
