Graduate School of Strategic Studies(Dean Won Bin Cho) visited Makerere University in Uganda and the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy (ICT) in Kenya from Monday, February 23 to Friday, February 27, and agreed to promote future mutual exchanges.
Makerere University, founded in 1922, is the oldest and most prestigious national comprehensive university in Uganda. Located in the capital city of Kampala, it is a leading institution in East Africa and has produced numerous presidents and leaders. Currently, it offers diverse academic programs across nine colleges and is engaged in cooperation with Korea to strengthen remote education and e-learning capacity. Dean Won Bin Cho met with Vice-Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe to introduce SKKU and agreed to continue discussions on expanding opportunities for mutual exchange between the two universities.
Dean Won Bin Cho also delivered a special lecture titled “K-democracy” to students at Makerere University, addressing changes in Korea’s political system and the current state of its democracy. The lecture was attended by the Dean of the College of Social Sciences, faculty members from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, and students, who demonstrated strong interest by raising numerous questions regarding the deepening of democracy in Korea.
Dean Won Bin Cho visited Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy (ICT), where he met with local government officials and startup founders. Kenya, known as the “Silicon Savannah,” is emerging as a hub for ICT, finance, and logistics in East Africa. With a high mobile phone subscription rate (122.8%) and a vibrant digital economy driven by mobile banking services such as M-Pesa, the country aims to become a global digital hub through the development of smart cities (Konza Technopolis) and the attraction of digital talent. Korean technology is contributing to Kenya’s digital education and industrial development through initiatives such as the completion of IT education centers and the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Kenya-AIST).
