Law School Hosts Academic Exchange Seminar with Nagoya University

The Graduate School of Law at Nagoya University, a Japanese national university (Dean: Professor Masafumi Nakahigashi), dispatched a delegation to our university’s Law School (Dean: Professor Sunhee Lee) as part of the CAMPUS Asia Program, a trilateral exchange initiative for government-sponsored students from Korea, China, and Japan. Taking this opportunity, on Saturday, March 15, an academic seminar was jointly organized by the Japanese Law Society, a student-led organization at our Law School, and participants of the CAMPUS Asia Program, with support from the East Asian Law and Politics Research Institute (Director: Professor Cheol Kwon).

The delegation from Nagoya University was led by Professor Yukinori Udagawa (specializing in Comparative Law and Chinese Law) and consisted of undergraduate law students, law school students, and graduate students. During their stay in Korea from March 13 to 19, they visited the courts, the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, and major law firms, in addition to participating in the academic seminar at our university.

The seminar focused on the theme “Disaster Management and Law,” proposed by the Japanese delegation. Students from Nagoya University delivered presentations, followed by in-depth discussions and Q&A sessions led by our undergraduate and law school students. The presentations and discussions were conducted in both Korean and Japanese, with members of our university’s Japanese Law Society showcasing their fluency in foreign languages and strong analytical skills, actively leading the academic exchange.

Nagoya University professors and students expressed admiration for the high level of discussion demonstrated by our students. Professor Cheol Kwon, head of the CAMPUS Asia program at our university and a specialist in Civil Law, also encouraged students to maintain their enthusiasm for academic exploration.

Following the seminar, participants continued their exchange by touring the campus and the historic Sungkyunkwan Munmyo Shrine.

The CAMPUS Asia Program, led by Korea’s Ministry of Education and the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE), is a prestigious trilateral exchange initiative among top universities in Korea, China, and Japan. Launched in 2011, the program expanded in 2021 to include ASEAN universities under the Mode 3 framework. Our university, alongside Seoul National University and leading universities in China and Japan, serves as one of Korea’s coordinating institutions. The current program is set to conclude in 2025, and applications for Mode 4, the next phase of the initiative, will begin in the second half of 2025.
