Bing Bong Bing Bong Team (School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering) wins Grand Prize at the 3rd National Autonomous Driving Software Competition for Future Vehicles

The Future Vehicle Technology Convergence Innovation Talent Development Project Group (headed by Prof. Jae Wook Jeon) announced that the Bing Bong Bing Bong team from our university’s School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (team members: Jae In Lee, Hye Kyung Choi, Min Ji Kim, Jin Woo Joo, and Ji Wook Jung) won the Grand Prize (Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award) at the 3rd National Autonomous Driving Software Competition for Future Vehicles. The competition was held on Friday, August 16th, at the Gachon University Gymnasium in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.

This competition, aimed at nurturing core talent for future vehicles, was hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, and the Future Vehicle Technology Convergence Innovation Talent Development Project Council, and was organized by Gachon University. A total of 22 teams comprising 133 participants from 25 universities, including Sungkyunkwan University and Seoul National University, which were selected for the Future Vehicle Technology Convergence Innovation Talent Development Project, took part in the event.

Each participating team developed and installed autonomous driving software on a child-sized electric vehicle, scaled to one-fifth the size of an actual car, equipped with cameras, LiDAR, and ultrasonic sensors to compete in autonomous driving performance.

The Bing Bong Bing Bong team achieved the fastest time on the designated track, securing the top score in driving performance. They also took first place in mission tasks, which included obstacle avoidance, traffic light recognition, and parking, leading them to victory and earning the Grand Prize (Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award). The team was awarded a prize of 2 million KRW and an opportunity to attend the 2025 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Team leader Jae In Lee expressed his joy, saying, “There were tough times while preparing for the competition, but I’m happy that our team’s efforts paid off. I’m also grateful to Professor Jae Wook Jeon and the project team for their unwavering support.”

Professor Jae Wook Jeon, head of the project group, commented, “Winning this national competition has highlighted the excellence of our university’s autonomous driving curriculum. I would like to thank the Bing Bong Bing Bong team, all the professors, graduate students, and project team members who worked hard on the autonomous driving education and competition. This will serve as a stepping stone for our university's autonomous driving technology to reach the global stage.”
